A new release of Microsoft Windows Vista’s SP 1 (Service Pack 1) has been spotted. The build string is:

6001.17129.080104.1910

It appears to have been compiled 3 days after build 6001.17128. I’m not sure if this will be available to testers or to the public.

Uninstall Instructions for Windows Vista SP1 RC:
Windows Vista SP1 RC does not support build-to-build upgrades. If you install this build to your system, you need to uninstall it before moving to the final Vista SP1 RTM version.

Prerequisite packages (KB935509, KB937287 and KB938371) for Window Vista SP1 are permanent and unistall of these packages is disabled by design. During the installation of Windows Vista SP1 RC, the installer determines whether or not you need the prerequisite packages and updates your system automatically.

To uninstall Windows Vista SP1 RC use the follwing steps:

1. Click on the Start Menu and go to Control Panel
2. Double click on Programs and Features
3. On the left side menu, select View Installed Updates
4. Under the list of Microsoft Windows, select Service Pack for Windows (KB936330)
5. On the top minu, click on Uninstall

Install Windows Vista SP1 RC through Windows Update!

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RC is available through Windows Update. Experience the WU based Vista SP1 installation by following 4 simple steps.

Windows Vista SP1 RC distributed through Windows Update will be applicable to Windows Vista machines that are running on any of the 36 languages supported by Vista RTM.

If you already installed the Service Pack to your machine by using the standalone package, you must uninstall before you scan Windows Update for Windows Vista SP1.

Systems running on Windows Vista RTM require as many as three updates before SP1 can be installed. These updates are permanent to your Windows Vista systems. Windows Update will detect your system configuration and offer the prerequisite packages that are applicable to your system. For details, please see the instructions below.

Here are 4 simple steps to get SP1 on your machine.

On Vista RTM:

1. Download the self extracting executable and extract its contents to a folder on your computer. Run the script on an elevated prompt.
• To run the script on elevated prompt, after you download the script, right click on the file and select “Run as administrator” option.
• The script sets a registry key on your system. The registry key is required for WU server to recognize your machine as a valid target for Vista SP1.
• After running the script, Windows Update automatic updates would normally automatically update your machine each night for the next several days with the prerequisites and then offer the Service Pack. However if you would like to install SP1 quicker you can manually do the next few steps to speed up the process.

2. Install all pending “Important” updates and reboot. You may have to do this several times to get fully up to date.
• Check for updates on Windows Update. Go to Control Panel à System and Maintenance à Windows Update and check for updates by clicking on “Check for Updates” in the top left of the task pane.
• You will be offered all previously released Windows Vista updates that you may not have installed on your system. Install all applicable updates. If you have a clean install of RTM, there might be quite a few updates to install. You may need to do this a couple of times to get fully up to date. At some point Update for Windows (KB935509) will be in this list. This is the first pre-requisite install. Reboot your machine when prompted.
• If you see Ultimate Extras, you can hide them by right-clicking and hiding. Simply unchecking them will not let the remaining updates show up. Please install all of the remaining “important” updates.
• If you reboot and rescan right away, at times you may not see all updates right away. Wait 10 minutes and scan again.

3. Install Update for Windows (KB937287) and Update for Windows (KB938371) as they are offered sequentially
• The first package that will be offered is Update for Windows (KB937287) and it does not require a reboot.
• Check for updates on Windows Update again, install and reboot when prompted for Update for Windows (KB938371). You may need to wait 10 minutes and re-scan again if it does not show up right after reboot.

4. Install Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330).
• Check for updates on Windows Update again, install and reboot when prompted for Windows Vista Service Pack 1. You may need to wait 10 minutes and re-scan again if the package does not show up right after the previous reboot.
• This process will typically take from 30 minutes to 1 hour but may take longer on some systems.

To reduce the number of reboots required to install Windows Vista Service Pack 1, the prerequisite packages will be released to Windows Vista customers through WU prior to the release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1. These prerequisite packages will be coupled with other updates that are applicable to Windows Vista RTM systems and require a reboot. Consequently, the systems that are getting updates through automatic updates will already have prerequisites installed at the time of the SP1 release and be directly offered SP1 through WU.

Guide to Upgrade or Install Windows Vista SP1 RC 1 Build 6001.17052 (v.668) Online

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 has been released to Microsoft Connect, MSDN, Technet subscribers, and it’s also available for free download in Windows Update. All users need to do is to simply add in a little registry key to the Vista system so that Windows Update or Microsoft Update can recognize and identify the PC as a legitimate target to install Windows Vista SP1 RC1, and shows the SP1 RC1 as one of the important updates option.

To install Windows Vista SP1 RC 1 Build 6001.17052 v.668 or upgrade from Vista SP1 v.658 or older beta online via Windows Update, simply follow the steps in the illustrative guide below. There is no need to uninstall and remove previous Beta or RC Preview of Vista SP1.

1. Download the WebUpdater registry hack script SP1RC_WUHack.cmd.
2. Right click on the .cmd (or .bat) and then select “Run as Administrator”.
3. After merging the registry key, open Windows Update, and click on Check for updates.
4. Two important updates are found and required to install - Update for Windows Vista (KB 935509) - v1.008 and Update for Windows Vista (KB 938371) - v1.024. Click on Install Updates to start downloading and installing these hot fixes.
5. Restart the computer after finished installation.
6. Run Windows Update and click on Check for updates again.
7. One important prerequisite important update for Vista SP1 has to be installed - Update for Windows Vista (KB 937287) - Build 6001.17052 (x32) (or x64). Click on Install Updates to download and install the KB937287 hotifx.
8. IMPORTANT: Reboot computer now. After installation of update, Windows Vista won’t asks for restart, but the system may not see Vista SP1 RC1 if not restarts.
9. After PC boots up, go to Windows Update again, and check for updates.
10. Voila, 1 important update with size of 51.0 MB - 539.2 MB is available for download and install. If your Vista WU doesn’t show any important update available, wait for a few minutes and try again.Click on View available updates will show the update as Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 - Build 6001.17052 (x86) (or x64) published on 5 December 2007.
11. Click on Install Update to start downloading and installing the much anticipating Vista SP1 RC1 now.
12. Windows Update will start downloading update (Vista SP1 RC1). The initial download size appears 52.5 MB.But as time progress, Windows Update detects more Vista components installed on your system, and will download larger and increasing size of service pack update for Vista. So don’t expect a speedy download.
13. After downloaded Vista SP1 RC1, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 dialog will appear.
    Click on Next to continue.
    Tick the check box for I accept license terms and then click on Next to continue.
    Click on Install to start installation of Vista SP1 Update immediately.
14. Windows Update now installing update 1 of 1. Installation process may take a while.
15. The update was successfully installed. In actual, the installation of Vista Service Pack 1 is still long way to go. Click on Restart now to finish installing service pack updates. There are 3 more stages of setup, where 2 stages will be done before shutting down, and final stage after system boots up before entering desktop.
16. Once you’re logged on and back to Vista desktop, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1 has been installed successfully and completely. There will be a balloon notification message pops up from system tray area to indicate that one update has been installed. You can go to Windows Update to review update history.Right click on the line of Service Pack 1 for Vista and select View details, you will get to see more detailed information about SP 1.

After installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Release Candidate 1, system properties (basic information) will display Service Pack 1, v.668.

About Windows (accessible in Help menu) will show Microsoft Windows Vista Version 6.0 (Build 6001: Service Pack 1, v.668)

Download Windows Vista SP1 RC Build 6001.17042 v.658 via WebUpdater

Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta build 6001.16659.070916-1443 v.275 has been upgraded to new version, and in the same time also patched and closed the hole of use registry tweak that allows previous release of Vista SP1 beta to be downloaded from Windows Update. However, the registry hack to download Vista SP1 beta still work with minor change to registry key to download the latest version of the service pack. However, it’s not certain if the new release is the Service Pack 1 Release Candidate (RC) Preview that accidentally leaked to MSDN earlier this month, and the name in Windows Update still says it’s Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta.

As previously warned, the Service Pack 1 for Vista is still currently in beta, and may cause the Vista system to be more unstable with more problems rather than solving current issues. Use and install SP1 beta only if you prepare to deal with problems that may arise.

1. Uninstall all older version of Windows Vista SP1 if you have installed any of them before you executing the following steps.
2. Download sp1_rc_17042_v658_web_updater.cmd file. if you cannot download, simply copy and paste the following text to a text editor, and save the file as sp1_rc_17042_v658_web_updater.cmd filename:

Note that to install Windows Vista SP1, users must install Vista in non-modified and non-altered manner. Only original Vista RTM, OEM DVD or those web download release from MSDN is confirmed to be able to use the hack to install SP1. If you installed Vista from vLite enhanced DVD media or image, you may not be able to install SP1.
